Welcome Back to The LifeLab Kids Journal

Last month, we explored the magic of music and how a simple beat or melody can bring joy and connection.

This September, we’re shining the spotlight on Speech Therapy. Speech therapy helps children share who they are, connect with others, and build confidence, one word, sound, or gesture at a time.

Communication isn’t just talking. It’s about showing feelings, asking for help, and understanding each other, through a smile, a sound, or a word. At LifeLab Kids, our sessions are full of creative activities, gentle encouragement, and personal attention, helping children take steps toward meaningful expression and joyful connection.

    Spotlight on Speech Therapy

Speech therapy isn’t just learning words. It’s learning to share feelings, connect with others, and be understood in their own way.

    Speech therapy helps children:

    • Uses fewer words than expected
    • Relies mostly on gestures
    • Feels shy in social situations

    Ways Parents Can Help:

    Ways Parents Can Help:

    • Narrate daily activities: “We’re pouring the milk.”
    • Offer choices: “Do you want an apple or banana?”
    • Celebrate every sound, gesture, or word: “I love how you pointed to the toy!”

Every small step is a big win toward confidence and connection.

    Targeted Approach in Speech Therapy

    Observation & Assessment

Therapists first observe how a child communicates through gestures, sounds, or words, to understand strengths and areas to focus on.

    Sound & Word Development

Activities are designed to practice specific sounds, vocabulary, and sentence formation in a fun, playful way.

    Interactive Games

Children engage in games that encourage speaking, listening, and social interaction.

    Visual & Sensory Support

Picture cards, toys, and gestures help children express themselves and understand words.

    Step-by-Step Progression

Every session builds on previous achievements, boosting confidence and making communication enjoyable.

    Therapist Spotlight

One of the most rewarding parts of being a speech-language pathologist is helping children discover the communication method that works best for them. Recently, I had the opportunity to support a young client in obtaining an AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) device, and the results have been life changing.

Prior to AAC, this child faced daily frustration and limitations in expressing even basic wants and needs. With access to their device, they are now initiating conversations, requesting items, labeling familiar objects, and even beginning to verbally imitate the words they select.

These are major milestones that not only support language development but also build confidence and reduce behavioral frustration. It has been incredible to watch their communication skills flourish, impacting not only their daily life but also bringing new joy and connection to their family.

Providing access to multimodal communication such as verbal speech, sign language, and AAC is essential, and it is truly inspiring to see what happens when a child is given the tools to thrive.
